What if I told you this is an estimation and these numbers are likely higher because of the amount of youth who are too afraid to be themselves and come out, fear of being rejected by their family and bullied?

"Many LGBTQ+ young people lack access to affirming spaces, with only 38% of LGBTQ+ youth reporting that their home is LGBTQ+-affirming and just over half saying that their school is LGBTQ+-affirming. Just over 1 in 3 transgender and nonbinary youth found their home to be gender-affirming, and 52% found their school to be affirming. The Trevor Project’s research consistently finds that LGBTQ+ young people report lower rates of attempting suicide when they have access to LGBTQ+-affirming spaces" (2024. www.thetrevorproject.org).

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. 💙💜

Suicide rates continue to rise in the LGBTQ community.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), LGBTQ+ teens are six times more likely to experience symptoms of depression than the general population.

Discussing transgender suicides is crucial because it highlights the urgent mental health crisis within the transgender community, often exacerbated by discrimination and stigma. Raising awareness can foster understanding and support, encouraging more inclusive policies and resources. By openly addressing this issue, we can work towards reducing isolation and promoting acceptance, ultimately saving lives.
